Fundamentally, the Young Lit and Phil sought to rejuvenate the poetry and storytelling community of Newcastle Upon Tyne by celebrating the spoken word, recognising the book as a sacred object and countering the current dominance of the visual realm. Through the use of different lighting levels and varying tactile materials experiential spaces would be created for readings to take place, but more importantly be remembered.
This project allowed me to gain an understanding in weaving a scheme sensitively into an existing urban fabric, whilst experimenting with the use of the warm vernacular brick .
